Vice President Kashim Shettima has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his professional background, while warning opposition politicians against underestimating President Bola Tinubu ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.

Shettima made the remarks on Wednesday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja. He used the occasion to defend Tinubu and caution political opponents against personal attacks during the election campaign.

The vice president also questioned the economic knowledge of some critics of the current administration, urging Nigerians to be careful about the economic advice they receive from politicians.

Shettima Questions Atiku's Professional Background

During his speech, Shettima referred to Atiku's training at the Kano School of Hygiene and used the description "Duba-gari" to question his economic credentials.

He argued that collecting taxes did not automatically make someone an expert in economics. According to him, understanding a modern economy requires more than basic knowledge of arithmetic or experience in collecting government revenue.

Shettima also warned Nigerians against listening to what he described as "voodoo economists". He maintained that economic discussions should focus on sound ideas, practical policies and a proper understanding of how the economy works.

His comments came as political parties and their leaders prepared for the 2027 elections, which are expected to generate intense debate over Nigeria's economy, leadership and future direction.

APC Will Respond to Insults Against Tinubu

Shettima also warned opposition politicians against insulting Tinubu during the campaign period.

He said the ruling party was prepared to discuss policies and ideas with its opponents but would respond if anyone crossed the line by attacking the president personally.

The vice president stressed that political competition should not turn opponents into enemies. He described rival politicians as fellow Nigerians and leaders who deserve respect despite their different political positions.

He said the campaign should give candidates an opportunity to explain their plans and present solutions to the country's problems rather than engage in unnecessary personal attacks.

Shettima further argued that respect should be mutual, warning that people who refuse to respect others should not expect the same treatment in return.

Economy Expected to Dominate the 2027 Campaign

Nigeria's economy is expected to feature prominently in the 2027 presidential campaign. Issues such as the cost of living, employment, taxation, fuel prices and government spending are likely to attract attention from voters and political parties.
